Fire Safety at Christmas

The festive season brings with it celebration, and with that, an increased risk of fire. There are a few things you can do to prevent a fire this Christmas.

  • Install a smoke alarm - this is one of the simplest ways to reduce your risk of fire. You should test your smoke alarms regularly to ensure they are fully functional and effective. Click here to shop smoke alarms.
  • Plan an escape route - should a fire break out, ensure you and your guests are aware of the escape route, and dial 999 immediately.
  • Never place candles near flammable objects such as Christmas trees or decorations.
  • Ensure your Christmas lights carry the British Safety Standard sign.
  • If you're lighting a fire, keep well away from the flames to avoid clothing catching alight.
  • Do not leave your cooker unattended, and avoid leaving flammable items like tea towels close to open flames.
  • Keep candles and matches away from children.
  • Though decking the house with festive lights is fun, it's important not to overload your plug sockets, and always unplug them before you go to bed.
  • Keep cigarettes away from flammable items and ensure they are put out properly.
